Nancy Boy products are scented with natural essential oil. These oils provide a delightful experience for the senses because they smell so good. Just as important, they have been used for thousands of years by natural healers for their aromatherapeutic properties. Traditional Western practicitioners have only recently begun to see their value.
BLOSSOMWOOD is composed of floral top notes with a woodsy bottom note of petitgrain, from the leaves and bark of the orange tree. The overall blend is redolent of orange blossom and rosewood. Aromatherapeutically, petitgrain is a relaxant and sedative; this blend is perfect for winding down.
CITRUS is composed of California pink grapefruit, and lemon and bergamot from Italy. Bergamot, the aromatic citrus fruit that flavors Earl Grey tea, balances the blend. Citrus essential oils are most known for their aromatherapeutic anti-depressant properties. The combination of three in this blend makes it especially mood-brightening, especially for those with SAD.
HEARTH, available during October, November & December, is our holiday scent composed of juniper berry, bitter orange, clove bud and cardamom essential oils. It's woodsy, spicy and warm. Spice oils like cardamom and clove are anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-imflammatory; in antiquity, through the 19th century, they were used in winter by people who could afford to treat seasonal illness.
INVIGORATING is a tingly wake-up call of pure peppermint and spearmint essential oils. It's refreshing and lively, perfect for folks who need a little extra oomph to get going. Members of the mint family provide the highest levels of natural anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties.
LAVENDER-GERANIUM is a blend of French lavender and lushly floral Rose-Geranium. Both lavender and geranium soothe skin irritation, making the combination a natural for laundry products.
LEMON VERBENA is a fragrant herb native to South America but prized for centuries by French perfumers for its heady, lemony scent. Aromatherapeutically, it is calming to the nervous system.
ORIGINAL LAVENDER is composed of 100% French lavender essential oil. With its floral and herbal notes, lavender is the most widely-used scents in perfumery and personal care products. It is also the oldest; Mary is reputed to have used it to anoint Jesus. Besides its pleasing aroma, lavender possesses a wealth of aromatherapeutic properties; we appreciate it especially because it helps reduce anxiety and stress and aids in sleep.
REPLENISHING is subtle and clean, made with steam-distilled cucumber and California lemon oil. Excellent for people who prefer unscented products because the scent is so very subtle. Cucumbers contain erepsin, a protein also found in our bodies, that makes it excellent for skin-softening.
SIGNATURE is our most popular scent, outselling all others by a significant factor. French lavender is blended with Washington peppermint and Tunisian rosemary to give it clean, fresh, bracing notes to which men and women are both drawn. From a mood standpoint, this blend is exceptionally balancing, perhaps why it's so popular. What this means is that the lavender is calming and restorative while the peppermint and rosemary are energizing; it's the ideal "mid-afternoon slump" scent to spritz.
SPA is composed of Australian eucalyptus, California lemon and Washington mint, redolent of our favorite Napa Valley spa. Clean, fresh, astringent. Because eucalyptus and peppermint are both highly energizing, this blend is stimulating. Eucalyptus, peppermint and lemon are all anti-bacterial, making this blend useful in soaps and deodorants.
SWEETGRASS bears the essence of the Orient. The tang of lemongrass meets floral top notes of rose geranium for a lush, full-bodied fragrance. Aromatherapeutically, the lemongrass in Sweetgrass has anti-depressant properties. Combined with Egyptian geranium, known for its support of the circulatory and nervous systems, this custom blend is an aromatherapeutic powerhouse.

All of our products are paraben-free, phthalate-free and contain no artificial colors or fragrances. 15% of our products include ingredients that aren't considered "natural" even if they are derived from natural ingredients, like the ammonium laureth sulfate in our shampoo, which comes from coconuts. Some ingredients, like the polymers in our styling gel aren't found in nature. We use our products every day. So do our fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, nephews, nieces and best friends. Not to mention you, our customers, who we have a vested interest in keeping healthy, wealthy and wise.
WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ARTIFICIAL & NATURAL FRAGRANCE?
Artificial fragrance is like artificial flavor - chemicals arranged to mimic something natural. Real fragrance comes from real plants, through the steam extraction of flowers, fruit rind or rare woods into their essential oils.
The FDA allows manufacturers to use the term "Fragrance" on an ingredient listing if the product contains artificial scent, and artificial scent contains pthalates. Consumers don't see these toxic ingredients listed on the label because the few companies that control 90% of the personal care business also exercise undue influence over the FDA, which "regulates" the personal care industry.
Estee Lauder owns 30 brands, including Aveda, Bumble & Bumble, Jo Malone, Origins, M-A-C, La Mer, Bobbi Brown, Prescriptives, etc.
L'Oreal owns Kiehl's, The Body Shop, Maybelline, Biotherm, Helena Rubenstein, Garnier, Lancome, etc.
Proctor & Gamble owns Olay, Max Factor, Cover Girl, Herbal Essence, Pantene, Gillette, Noxzema, etc.
Unilever owns Axe, Dove, Vaseline, Lifebuoy, Pond's, etc.
Nearly all of these brands still contain artificial fragrance because it’s so cheap in comparison to plant-based essential oils. If the ingredients listing doesn't say "essential oil" (and often even when the product is labeled, "unscented") it contains artificial fragrance.
WHY DO YOUR PRODUCTS VARY IN COLOR?
The essential oils in our products vary in color from season to season. While lavender is always clear, pink grapefruit can range from light pink to shocking orange. We don't "color correct" for these variations, so our finished products will also range in hue.
ARE NANCY BOY PRODUCTS FOR MEN?
Our products work well for people with hair and skin. Women now account for over 55% of our sales.
We’ve been programmed to believe that men and women need different products. But men's products are simply repackaged women's products. A good example is Clinique's Dramatically Different moisturizer (for women) and M Lotion (for men). Compare them and you'll see they contain exactly the same ingredients.
WHERE ARE NANCY BOY PRODUCTS SOLD?
You can find Nancy Boy products on our website and by visiting our San Francisco retail store.
WHERE ARE NANCY BOY PRODUCTS MADE?
Nancy Boy products are made in Berkeley, California, except for our soap, which is made in Rhode Island.
WHY ARE THERE PURCHASE LIMITS ON SOME PRODUCTS?
Some people seem to want to buy caseloads of certain products, which isn't practical for a lot of reasons. Also, we don't load up our products with preservatives, so we'd like you to buy what you can use over a reasonable amount of time (up to about 12 months) rather than stockpile and then be disappointed if something isn't usable.
DOES NANCY BOY TEST ITS PRODUCTS ON ANIMALS?
No. Our tagline,"Tested on Boyfriends - Not Animals" is printed on our packaging.
