I bathed in the Dead Sea when I was 16. It’s a really trippy place because back then at least, it was in the middle of nowhere, in this denuded desert. The salinity is so intense that you’re incredibly buoyant—you simply can’t sink—but it also means that if you have even the eeny-beeniest cut on your skin, it hurts like a swearword. There were all these mostly older people on the muddy banks, kind of gathering up the mud and plopping it on their bodies, and when you got out, because it’s about 105 degrees, you dried instantly with this salty scale all over you that itched like a swearword. I think it’s different now—there are many highly upscale spas, with swimming pools and mineral baths and outdoor showers. At the time, as an impoverished student, I would have paid about $100 for an outdoor shower.

People who like it say 1) they “experience chronic back pain which these salts in a hot bath help relieve” 2) say the custom scent blend is unlike any eucalyptus fragrance they’ve ever smelled and “is addictive”

People who didn’t like it 1) said they don’t like the smell of eucalyptus
