Active Deodorant (signature scent)

This product actually works. When it comes to natural deodorants, that’s saying something. The problem with most, and you’ll know it if you’ve tried a few, is they aren’t effective. Either they smell horrible right out of the bottle, or you do after wearing them a few hours. They also tend to be very wet going on, so my favorite thing about this one, aside from the subtle signature scent, is that after applying 2 sprays under each arm I’m dry within ten to fifteen seconds.

A deodorant’s job is to neutralize the bacteria that cause odor. Nancy Boy Active Deodorant addresses the problem with a multi-pronged approach. First, the essential oils in our signature blend are purpose-grown for natural odor prevention. Lavender is antiseptic, peppermint is anti-microbial and rosemary is anti-fungal and anti-microbial.

Next, nothing is better than alcohol at keeping skin clean and sanitized—that’s why it’s swabbed on just prior to surgery—but the natural grain alcohol we use is much gentler on the skin than common isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. And the very reason we avoid it in other skincare products—that it dries the skin—makes it ideal in a deodorant. Steam-distilled witch hazel extracts tighten pores, kill odor and soothe inflammation. The formulation is finished off with hops, another of nature’s potent odor neutralizers.

Mild Deodorant (unscented for sensitive skin)

If our Active Deodorant (see above) is the Captain Thunderbolt of natural deodorants, this one is gentler—think Mother Earth—inspired by our friend Shannon, who is beautiful, funny and wise. She’s the type who meditates in a yurt, communes with Nepalese monks (not in person, just, you know, in thought waves) and then throws on strappy heels, a stunning dress that sets off her décolletage to great effect and meets us for dinner at Zuni. What a gal.

Anyway, she’s Ms. Nature with a capital “N” and only uses the products we make that don’t contain preservatives and is slightly irritating to dine with because of innumerable food restrictions (she’s all about raw at the moment and eats most meals at this atrocious restaurant chain we have here called Café Gratitude, don’t even get me started) and so when we excitedly showed her the prototype for the Active Deodorant formulation and she tried it, her reaction was, let’s be frank, horribly disappointing. She said she’d never use it.

“You’re such guys. Women shave their arms, at least most of us do, and even though we want a natural product, we’re not about to spray alcohol on freshly-shaved arms!” “Why ever not? It would cauterize the wound,” I retorted brightly.

So we gathered up the shards of our dignity, trudged back to the lab and worked and worked (she, and the legion of granola eating friends she collected for the project, both male and female, rejected ten iterations) until we emerged with this winner. The ingredients are all top-shelf botanicals, selected especially for their odor-neutralizing, skin soothing properties. Steam-distilled extracts of witch hazel, the hard-charging nucleus of this formulation, kill odor naturally, soothe redness and inflammation and their natural astringency help to actually shrink the pores so sweating is reduced at the source.

Hops, chamomile, aloe vera and sea kelp extract are all mild on the skin, but possess potent odor-neutralizing effects. This unscented formulation does not have any added fragrance or masking agents and smells clean, light and fresh. It’s also a sweet value, considering the Dr. Hauschka brand has the same ingredients but smells funky, wasn't at all as effective at preventing odor when tested on Shannon’s Earth Children and sells for $19.95 for 1.7 ounces versus ours at $14.00 for 2.7 ounces. If you don’t have a calculator handy, that's more than twice as much on an ounce for ounce basis.
