When Eric and Jack opened the first Nancy Boy store on San Francisco's Market Street in 2002, there were only five products (shampoo, conditioner, gel, moisturizer and ultramarine night cream). Minimalism was taken to a level so exalted the first customers thought it was a museum. Desperation being the mother of intervention, they decided to see whether Jack's collection of fine vintage pottery and Murano glass might fill out the shop and even, gulp, sell. It did and it did. From there, it was a short leap to other fine vintage decor like lamps, occasional tables and upholstered furniture. It helped that Jack studied architecture in college, understood how the furniture was made, where the style originated, why the craftsman made the specific artistic decisions reflected in each piece. When Nancy Boy opened in San Francisco's Hayes Valley in 2005, the city's interior designers began shopping the store and word spread. After nearly a decade of selling this eclectic range of furniture and decor, a number of clients asked Eric and Jack to design their homes. In one case, the client was building a home, guest house and pool house in the country and needed everything from architectural consultation to top-to-bottom interiors work including finishes, flooring, tile, lighting, furniture, accessories and kitchen/bathroom design. Another client was moving into a new home with a combination guest house/sound studio and needed architectural consultation for interior and exterior remodeling as well as assistance in disposition of existing furniture, art-quality rugs and artwork, design for a new interior and acquisition of new artwork, rugs, furniture and accessories. Clients splitting their time between LA and the Bay Area with an estate in a challenging architectural style needed assistance in thoroughly updating the residence without compromising its unique vintage character. A new interior design encompassing all living areas was required; the kitchen was fully remodeled. Since these initial projects we've worked on similarly large and challenging assignments as well for clients with less robust needs, like making over a room or using the existing furnishings in a home to achieve a dramatically different look. We find immense gratification in bringing clients' desires to fruition; the size of the job is immaterial. How We WorkBefore getting to work on the design, over which Jack has primary responsibility, we establish overall design objectives with each client. This process, typically quite brief (an afternoon) is led by Eric based on his background in consumer research and marketing. In this way clients get to design solutions they love much more quickly and importantly spend less money as a result. How we charge is simple--it's hourly. We don't mark up anything we buy or charge any kind of commission. All of the designer discounts we receive are passed directly on to our clients. We do all the work ourselves, and while we are investing a fortune in clones so far nothing has panned out except a sheep that looks vaguely like Eric. We'd love to discuss your project and even if we're not available we know lots of great people in the business (you've obviously heard of the gay interior designer mafia) and can always make a referral.
