After selling these arrangements for a while, I do have some hints. In general, I’d say they are more decorative than scent-pumping over the long-haul (that is, beyond, say, two months) in that the natural essential oils don’t have the staying power that nasty artificial scents do. If you’re looking for one with longer-lasting scent, I’d recommend Spa—for some reason, it lasts the longest (three months). Next strongest is Sweetgrass, followed by Signature. The Tea rose scent is lovely, but the flowers do tend to fade rather quickly. All you need to do is push the top layer under the very vibrant flowers that rest beneath it and keep doing that; in this way, the arrangement will last a long time. Citrus is perhaps, with Spa, the most decorative arrangement, but the wimpiest when it comes to scent. In fact, it’s the only one we don’t pre-scent —we include a small bottle of oil that you use to scent it once you receive it. Even then, it’s rather, um, unimpressive, as citrus really needs some kind of heat to diffuse its lovely fragrance. If you like the way it looks, as we do (that’s what we have at home) buy it for that reason. Finally, if you do want to refresh the scent of any of these arrangements over time, you can purchase the appropriate essential oil, add ten or so drops every once in a while and that should do the trick.

SIGNATURE is our most popular home scent. French lavender makes it calming and restorative, but the Washington peppermint and Tunisian rosemary give it clean, fresh, bracing notes to which both men and women are drawn.

CITRUS is our rarest, most subtle home scent, composed of California pink grapefruit, and lemon and bergamot from Italy. Most citrus scents are too bright and sweet; by adding bergamot, the scarce citrus fruit that flavors Earl Grey tea, we’ve achieved a fragrant, harmonious balance that citrus aficionados adore.

SWEETGRASS is our most complex home scent, in which we balance the springlike freshness of Italian lemon and Indian lemongrass with the woodsiness of Moroccan cedar and finish with a note of rose geranium from China. It’s an aromatic scent that recalls the perfect warm summer evening—lush, romantic, enveloping.

TEA ROSE is our floral home scent with a twist, in that it’s far lighter and more balanced than other florals. The addition of costly Brazilian rosewood adds pleasing depth, while real green tea from Japan conjures crisp, clean notes of spring. The overall effect is fresh-mown heaven.

SPA is our newest home scent but is also our second best-selling, after Signature. Composed of Australian eucalyptus, lemon and mint, it literally replicates the scent of an upscale European spa in your own home. It’s clean, fresh and lively and will perk up even the most dismal day—or surroundings.

People who like it say 1) they’ve “never seen potpourris this imaginative or stunning” 2) they love the scent, especially in a stuffy office 3) “put it in their workspace and had the whole department asking what it was and where they could get it”

People who didn’t like it 1) were disappointed the scent didn’t last longer
