This is one product we don’t make ourselves; we work with an outside manufacturer who makes them to our specifications. Here’s what the company does to prove how pure the soy candles are: they take an unscented soy candle, put it in a frying pan, melt it, add chicken, fry it up and then eat it. We've been offered a piece of fried-in-soy-wax chicken, but we’re going to trust them. The candles really are special, though. Did you know that regular candle wax is a byproduct of the petrochemical distillation process? That’s why they give off such a gassy awful smell, and also why scented ones are so terribly, sickly strong: you have to put in tons of artificial scent to both overcome the gas smell and also create a semblance of supposedly “nice” fragrance. But if you start with clean, long burning soy wax, you can use natural fragrances that are subtly and breathtakingly aromatic. Try one—you’ll never go back to those freaky mall candles again. (And because soy burns so long, they’re actually more of a value too.)

Hints on the scents: There are any numbers of ways to describe them to people who can’t actually take a whiff, but after selling these for a while, here’s my best effort: If you like a clean lively flowery scent, consider blossom. If you like a more heady, perfumed flowery scent, check out islands. If you enjoy fresh citrus notes, tangelo is sublime. If you like woodsy scents that are more fresh and bracing, choose alpine; if you like woodsy scents that are spicier and more complex, go for woods. If you like grassy scents, sawgrass is the way to go.

People who like it 1) enjoy the unique scent blends and how “they fill the house in a subtle not overpowering way” 2 are surprised by how long the candles last 3) are happy they don’t create smoke/soot

People who didn’t like it 1) didn’t trim the candle wick after each burn, so the flame burned too big and the candle didn’t last as long as claimed
