Jeepers this deodorant is popular. We're a little surprised, because one of the first things you need to know about it is that it's not an anti-perspirant, and when we developed it we didn't think there were very many people who would buy something that doesn't plug up your pores so you don't sweat. We were wrong.
So in case you're wondering what the difference between a deodorant and an anti-perspirant is, well, first, they do different things. Deodorants like ours use natural ingredients to kill bacteria that cause odor, while anti-perspirants use chemicals, always including some form of aluminum, to plug up your pores so you can’t sweat.
The American medical establishment, including the FDA, does not consider anti-perspirants to be a danger although they are regulated and labeled as drugs and the manufacturers warn anyone with kidney disease against using them. (Take a gander at www.suredeodorant.com for some rather interesting me-thinks-you-doth-protest-too-much hilarity).
Hard to know whether it’s a big concern or not (I tend to think the world is going to explode before I die of cancer, which is why I eat so much full-fat ice cream with extra whip cream) but we grew to hate the artificial feeling, smell and overall vibe of anti-perspirants anyway. Unappealing body odor is repulsive (how's that for stating the obvious?). But the freakishly repressed Victorian headmaster who decided that sweating (the body’s natural toxin purge) is also socially unacceptable has long been laid to rest, thank goodness.
Moving on, the problem with most natural deodorants, and you’ll know it if you’ve tried a few, is they aren’t effective. Either they smell horrible right out of the bottle, or you do after wearing them a few hours. They also tend to be very wet going on, so my favorite thing about this one, aside from the subtle signature scent, is that after applying 2 sprays under each arm I’m dry within ten to fifteen seconds.
A deodorant’s job is to neutralize the bacteria that cause odor. Nancy Boy Active Deodorant addresses the problem with a multi-pronged approach. First, the essential oils in our signature blend are purpose-grown for natural odor prevention. Lavender is antiseptic, peppermint is anti-microbial and rosemary is anti-fungal and anti-microbial. Next, nothing is better than alcohol at keeping skin clean and sanitized—that’s why it’s swabbed on just prior to surgery—but the natural grain alcohol we use is much gentler on the skin than common isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. And the very reason we avoid it in other skincare products—that it dries the skin—makes it ideal in a deodorant. Steam-distilled witch hazel extracts tighten pores, kill odor and soothe inflammation. The formulation is finished off with hops, another of nature’s potent odor neutralizers.
2.7oz/80ml
USAGE INSTRUCTIONS: Apply 2-3 sprays under dry arms as needed. A word of caution: As described above, this formula works through the combination of several key active ingredients. After first applying it, you will feel a tingle which will intensify for several minutes, then dissipate. Don’t apply to just-shaved skin because it will sting like a mother.
INGREDIENTS: Natural grain alcohol, essential oil, witch hazel hydrosol, hops.
PEOPLE WHO LIKE IT say it is “surprisingly effective and dries fast,” remark often and favorably on the signature scent that “smells great but isn’t overwhelming and doesn’t linger,” like using a spray for hygienic reasons, “finally found a deodorant that works”
PEOPLE WHO DIDN”T LIKE IT said it tingled too much [felt like a burning sensation], didn’t like using a spray [prefer roll-ons], don’t like scented deodorants/signature scent
