The Signature-scent Active Deodorant has been such a smash hit we’re following up with this companion product that leverages the proven antiseptic powers of Tea Tree oil. And not just any Tea Tree oil, but rare Manuka Tea Tree, the most potent broad-spectrum antibacterial/antifungal Tea Tree sub-species (see below for details). Tea Tree is paired with Eucalyptus, lemon and peppermint essential oils to leverage their own legendary antibacterial properties and provide the fresh clean Spa scent we’re famous for. Witch hazel hydrosol and hops finish off the formulation, which is carried in a natural grain alcohol base that dries on your skin in mere seconds. This is a natural deodorant that doesn’t feel like one and works better than any of the others you’ve tried. Really.
Crushed Tea Tree leaves (and their inhaled oils) were first used by the indigenous people of Australia and New Zealand to treat a wide variety of skin and respiratory ailments. During WWII the steam-distilled oil saved thousands of lives in the South Pacific, where medics used it as a battlefield treatment before penicillin was available.
Tea Tree hit the natural personal care products scene several years ago. But 95% of the brands that feature it use the commonly available variety because it’s cheapest. There are three main varieties of Tea Tree: Melaleuca alternifolia, which is common and cheap, Kanuka (Kunzea ericoides) and Manuka (Leptospermum scoparium). Manuka is five times more costly than the common variety and is up to 20 times more effective than the other two against a broad spectrum of skin bacteria and fungus, including staph. The Manuka oil we buy is exceptionally pure, grown only in the Te Araroa region of New Zealand’s East Cape.
The Tea Tree and Eucalyptus species are closely related, as they’re both native to Australia. It follows that Eucalyptus also provides powerful antibacterial, antiseptic and antifungal properties. In the 19th century, Eucalyptus oil was used throughout UK hospitals to sterilize catheters and it’s traditionally been used as a topical treatment for boils, sores and wounds.
Marrying Tea Tree with Eucalyptus is a no-brainer from an anti-bacterial standpoint, but it also provides a fresh, clean, now-I-can-get-my-day-started-right kind of scent. Eucalyptus is balanced with refreshing notes of lemon and mint. We call it Spa. You can call it um, Spa.
