We love mint tea but don’t always want it green or herbal. Is it too much to ask for a satisfying robust black tea naturally flavored with organic peppermint and spearmint leaves? Evidently, because we couldn’t find any to our liking. (Granted, we’re persnickety queens who make the Princess of the Pea seem positively easygoing in comparison.) In fact, this is a refined version of the Bigelow’s Plantation Mint we grew up drinking so we know we’re not utterly beyond the pale.
But if memory serves Plantation Mint was pretty average (though dressed up in pretty foil packaging) tea bag tea, meaning it was made out of tea dust and mint dust. Ours is different. The rich organic Assam tea leaves are Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe grade. We use both peppermint and spearmint leaves for full-bodied mint aroma and taste; both are organic and you can see the bright green leaves against the earthy brown of the tea.
With some flavored teas, manufacturers take the opportunity to use a low-grade tea by dumping in an overpowering amount of whatever is flavoring it. That’s because whatever is flavoring it is always less costly than a superior tea. We blended this one so there’s good mint flavor but it isn’t overpowering--it’s still about the tea quality.
Black tea like Assam contains polyphenols, a type of antioxidant with proven health benefits. If you want to try it but are concerned about the muss & fuss, check out our Tea & Infuser Combo offer, below. This infuser makes brewing loose tea as easy as using a bag.
4 ounces
Ingredients: 100% organic Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe India tea, organic peppermint leaves, organic spearmint leaves.
Usage Instructions
To brew, use 1 teaspoon tea per 8 ounces water. Place tea in pot or infuser. Bring filtered water just to boil; pour over tea & steep for 3-4 minutes or to taste. So that the tea can “stand up” to the addition of milk or sugar, generally the brewing time is extended by a minute.
