What makes Nancy Boy different from other product lines?
The biggest and most relevant difference is that we're still small relative to our global competitors. That means we make our products locally, in Berkeley (not offshore), in small batches (not by the ton), with rare essential oils (not artificial fragrances) and traditional, rarely available plant-based cleansing and conditioning remedies (not container loads of lower-grade ingredients).
In fact, just six multi-national companies account for over 80% of the volume in premium beauty products!* Estee Lauder, with 2002 sales of $4.7 billion makes the goop that goes into the jars of 18 global brands, including Aveda, MAC, La Mer, Bobbi Brown and Clinique, while Kiehl's, Lancome and Biotherm are just a few the brands that helped push L'Oreal sales to $16.9 billion in 2002. But bigger isn't always better, especially when it comes to the products we apply directly to our bodies.

Why does Nancy Boy make one shampoo when the other brands have dozens: some for oily hair, some for dry hair, some for damaged hair, etc?
The sad fact is that we've all been sold a lot of hooey about what our hair and skin need to look and feel great. Why? Because there's lots of money to be made in that hooey! Beauty industry profits are driven by the constant introduction of ever more numerous products, for every conceivable "need," when what we really need is fewer but more effective products.
Why doesn't Nancy Boy advertise?
Building our business on word-of-mouth from satisfied customers has allowed us to put our resources into the products we make rather than splashy ad campaigns. Again, this approach sets us apart from our bigger competitors, who invest only 2% of their sales in research and development but plough a staggering 25% of sales into advertising and promotion.

Are Nancy Boy products "all-natural?"
Our laundry soap and home-scent products and some of our skincare products, including scented body oils, salt scrubs, bath salts, bath oils, pre-shave oil, cooling after shave gel, toning and moisturizing face masks, etc. are "all-natural."
Some other products in our haircare and skincare line are not. Nancy Boy products do not contain any artificial colors or fragrances, but to be considered "all-natural" by the FDA, a hair or skincare product can contain no preservatives and thus, in some cases, must even be refrigerated. So, even though the preservatives in Nancy Boy products are derived from natural ingredients like coconuts and other natural plants, some of our hair and skincare products are not considered to be "all-natural" by FDA guidelines.
What's the difference between artificial fragrance and real fragrance?
Artificial fragrance is like artificial flavor - freaky chemicals arranged to mimic something natural. The problem is that chemicals don't smell like real lavender, just like a cherry Life Saver doesn't taste anything like a cherry.
Real fragrance comes from real plants, generally through the steam extraction of flowers, fruit rind or rare woods into their essential oils. These essential oils are costly, volatile and extremely difficult to work with. That's why 99.99% of brands (even the freakishly expensive ones) use artificial fragrance instead of the essential oils we use in Nancy Boy products.
Are Nancy Boy products just for men?
Our products work well for anyone with hair or skin! We know this to be true, because women account for a little over 50% of our sales. Again, to sell more products, the beauty biz marketing folks keep trying to convince men and women that they need different stuff. However, no one has adequately explained why, and in any case the men's products are simply repackaged forms of big-volume women's products with different fragrances. Lucky for us, it's become a cultural truism that gay men seem to point the way when it comes to high-grade health & beauty lines. When Queer Eye featured our stuff, our online sales went through the roof—but not, as one might imagine, among gay men; that's when our women's business exploded. Makes sense, really, as there aren't enough gay men on the planet, much less in the US to give Queer Eye the kind of ratings they were getting...
Why aren't Nancy Boy products sold in salons or department stores?
When we started our company, we decided that we would focus our attention on only two things: product quality and customer service. We're able to guarantee your satisfaction only by taking complete responsibility for every aspect of your experience as a Nancy Boy customer. So, in the unlikely event that you experience a problem or are dissatisfied with your experience in any way, the buck stops with us - not with some disinterested clerk at another store that happens to sell 14,213 other things.
Why does Nancy Boy use those nasty bad-for-the-environment packaging peanuts?
Oh, we hate them too. But as you can imagine, we receive literally tons of raw materials each month and even though we've begged our suppliers to use more environmentally friendly packaging, they're still "thinking about it." So when we pack your online order with those peanuts, we're simply recycling what we've already been sent, sort of passing on the happiness. If you really can't stand them, just indicate on your order form that you'd like us to use something else and we'll gladly make a substitution.
